When SMART-TD announced the “Jobs for Life” deal with Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern this week, the reaction was immediate and intense. A lot of you responded to a concern we’ve been hearing for months: “Finally, I can stop worrying about whether there’s going to be a place for me if this merger goes through.”

That relief is real. YOU, the members, are why we fought for this deal.

But let’s be honest. We’re also hearing things like “You can’t trust the railroads” and “SMART-TD is foolish for taking them at their word.”

We’re not going to sugarcoat it: those voices are absolutely right.

Not Our First Rodeo

If there’s one lesson we’ve learned since the 1860s, it’s that you cannot trust the railroads for a damn thing. They’ve got lawyers, lobbyists, and PR firms paid to get them out of any promise they ever make.

We’re not naïve. We didn’t just crawl out of a new-hire class with our bright orange hats still on. We’ve been in the trenches too long, seen too many broken promises, and buried too many brothers and sisters to believe the railroads would do this out of the goodness of their hearts.

That’s why, when they said no union employee would lose their job, we lawyered up. We legislated. We called in the press. Most importantly, we stood together as a force of 100,000 SMART-TD brothers and sisters with one demand: Put it in writing, make your promise legally binding.

And that’s what they did. About 15,000 of our members who would be impacted by the merger now have a written guarantee that they cannot be furloughed as a result. It can’t be walked back. This isn’t window dressing or an attempt to put a “feel better” spin on the announcement. Our agreement will hold up in court, and it will hold up in the real world.

Our brothers and sisters know they will have financial security, even if the railroads finally get their wish for one-person crews or fully autonomous trains.

Bitterness from Beyond SMART-TD

Let’s also clear something else up: many of the loudest voices trashing this deal are not SMART-TD members. Most of the naysayers and trash talkers weren’t able to get the same deal.

We understand why they’re upset. SMART-TD is the largest and strongest union at the bargaining table, in state houses and in D.C. Now our members have this job security guarantee on the table, and they don’t.

If the merger is approved there are going to be two kinds of employees at the new railroad: you will either be a SMART-TD member with iron-clad guarantees, or you won’t. You know which side you’re on, and so do they.

That’s a tough pill to swallow.

Our duty isn’t to ease the anxiety of nonmembers. SMART-TD exists to stand up for our members and their families.

When We Stand Together, We Win

Let’s be real: the carriers may have the money, the lawyers, and the public relations firms, but they don’t have what we have. As Jim Morrison sang with The Doors, “They’ve got the guns, but we’ve got the numbers.” And here’s what they don’t want you to know: the railroads know it, too.

Your strength and the value you bring to this country’s supply chain and to their companies is what brought them to the table on this deal. We couldn’t be dismissed. When the history of this merger and this industry is written, it’ll be SMART-TD members who stand tall, proud, and protected.

This deal is for every old head who laughed at you as a trainee and told you that you made the biggest mistake of your life joining the railroad because it would not be there for you in 30 years. You can tell them as of Monday, September 22, 2025, that if they believe that, they should have more faith in the union!

In Solidarity,
SMART-TD

Our jobs on the railroad and in bus service are more than just careers; they’re the way we provide stability, security, and opportunities for our families. The work we do is demanding and often takes us away from home, but it’s also work worth being proud of. One of the rewards of union membership is knowing that our families can benefit directly from opportunities like college scholarships.

Scholarships That Support the Whole SMART-TD Family

Scholarships are available not just to you as a member, but to spouses and dependent children too. These programs can help cover the rising costs of higher education and make the dream of a college degree more affordable.

Dozens of awards are offered annually to eligible applicants in the transportation trades. Since these programs began, they have provided critical support to students pursuing degrees in every field imaginable. Whether your child is just beginning their academic journey, or you or your spouse are looking to expand your career opportunities, these scholarships are a meaningful way to turn hard work into brighter futures.

Union Plus Program: Applications Open Now

The Union Plus Scholarship program is open right now for applications. Union Plus, which exists to serve union families, offers scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $4,000. The application period for the 2026 program is underway, and applying is free and straightforward. With awards that can cover tuition, books, or other educational expenses, this is truly “free money for college” available to union households.

Many of the other scholarships open for applications over the winter and in early spring, so now is a great time to gather the information and start making a plan to participate.

Turning Hard Work into Brighter Futures

These scholarships are a recognition of the sacrifices our members and their families make. The long hours, overnight shifts, and time away from loved ones are often driven by the desire to build a better future for our children. That’s why these programs exist: to reward the commitment of working families who have earned every bit of support their union can deliver.

Don’t let these opportunities pass by. Whether for yourself, your spouse, or your children, scholarships can be a powerful tool to ease the burden of college costs and help launch a professional path with less financial strain.

You’ve earned these benefits. Make sure your family gets the chance to use them.

ELLERBE, N.C. — SMART Transportation Division members from North and South Carolina came together for the third annual Carolina Solidarity Shoot at DeWitt’s Sporting Clays in Ellerbe, North Carolina. What started as a modest gathering has grown each year, becoming a hallmark of solidarity, fellowship, and team-building for rail and bus members alike.

Local 1715 President Virgina Walker (left) prepares to be the Trapper at station 1 during the Solidarity Shoot.

Organized by the Safety and Legislative Boards from both states, the event was spearheaded by State Legislative Directors (SLDs) Ron Ingerick of North Carolina and Will Ferguson of South Carolina. Locals 1715 and 1596 representing Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) operators and mechanics, respectively, both had a strong presence at the event.

President Ferguson Seeks Individual Member Feedback

SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson took part in the shoot, then sat down with members to hear their views about various issues. His one-on-one conversations covered the ongoing national negotiations and what our members are looking for in the next agreement, ensuring that every member’s perspective could be heard firsthand.

Shotgun Raffle Promotes DIPP Job Insurance

Brother Matt Tolliver (Local 1601, Appalachia, VA) represented SMART-TD’s Discipline Income Protection Program (DIPP) at the event by hosting a gun raffle for members. Any SMART-TD brother or sister who already held a DIPP policy or who signed up for one at the event was automatically entered to win a shotgun.

Mark Steverson, a conductor out of Local 782 (Asheville, NC) off the Norfolk Southern railroad, went home with a new Browning 28-inch, 12 Gauge Pump-action shotgun!

We’d also like to congratulate Brother J.P Hancock out of Local 1011 (Hamlet, NC).

Brother Hancock, who is a conductor on CSX, won the bragging rights for this year’s shoot, nailing down the best score of the day. J.P. may have hit the most targets, but everyone involved walked away a winner from this year’s Solidarity Shoot!

Representatives from American Journey Financial Life (formerly UTUIA), the SMART-TD Auxiliary, and the National Safety and Legislative Department, including Director Jared Cassity and Deputy Director Don Roach were in attendance.

Building Bridges Across State Lines

For SLDs Ingerick and Ferguson, the Carolina Solidarity Shoot has always been about more than clay targets. They share a vision to bring members of both Carolinas together for camaraderie, family-friendly fun, and open lines of communication.

Each year that vision becomes a stronger reality, with members and their families forming relationships that carry forward into their daily union work.

“SLD Ferguson, my counterpart in South Carolina, and I are very excited about the effect these Solidarity Shoots are having in our states,” Ron Ingerick, North Carolina’s state safety and legislative director, explained. “We came up with the idea to try to build lines of communication between our state boards. The result has been bigger than that. Our locals are working together on a new level, our members are having their thoughts and concerns heard directly by the president of our Union and the heads of our National Safety and Legislative Department. This event has taken on a life of its own over the past three years.

“On top of all that, it is a good opportunity to take a step back and reconnect with each other. We are all brothers and sisters in this union, and it is good to have a chance to relax and have a good time together. It’s important to remember why we are all in this fight and who we are fighting with and for.”

The third annual event showed once again that the Carolina Solidarity Shoot is achieving its goals: unifying members, strengthening state board cooperation, and giving members a direct channel to leadership at both the state and national levels.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 22, 2025 – Omaha, NE & Independence, OH

The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD), the nation’s largest railroad union, and Union Pacific Railroad, the nation’s largest railroad, today announced a historic agreement ensuring job security for thousands of railroad workers as Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern pursue a proposed merger.

This groundbreaking agreement guarantees that SMART-TD members working in train and yardmaster service will have job protection for the length of their careers following the transaction, subject to the usual requirements for continued employment. Union Pacific has committed that these employees will not face involuntary furloughs as a result of the merger. This is an unprecedented guarantee in the history of American railroading.

The result of these protections will reduce disruption to shippers and overall customer service. Therefore, SMART-TD is proud to announce its support for Union Pacific’s proposed merger with Norfolk Southern. This support will be reflected before the Surface Transportation Board in Docket No. 36873, where the union will stand behind the agreement as a model of protecting workers while advancing the industry.

Protecting Workers, Protecting the Supply Chain

SMART-TD entered these negotiations with one primary concern: the job security of the men and women who keep America’s freight moving. This agreement directly addresses that concern. With lifetime job protection, preferential hiring for affected terminal employees, and a commitment to work together on implementing agreements, both parties are ensuring that railroaders and their families will have stability and peace of mind for years to come.

“This is a proud day for our members,” said SMART-TD President Jeremy R. Ferguson. “For generations, railroaders have worried about what mergers might mean for their jobs and whether or not they would be given the opportunity to reach retirement on the rail. Today, we can say with confidence that the biggest railroad and the biggest rail union in America are breaking new ground. We are protecting jobs, protecting families, and protecting the future of the U.S. supply chain. I want to thank Jim Vena, Mark George and their teams for thinking outside the box and putting their employees at ease in unprecedented times. This is a bold agreement, and I’m proud of the mutually beneficial work done here and what Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and SMART-TD were able to accomplish.”

“I want to thank SMART-TD for its leadership. When we announced our intent to create the first transcontinental railroad in America, I made a promise to protect the jobs of all unionized employees. Those who have a job when the merger is approved will continue to have one,” said Union Pacific Chief Executive Officer Jim Vena. “I am confident we will unlock new sources of growth for the country and our industry, taking more trucks off taxpayer-funded highways, serving new markets, and keeping more railroad jobs in America.”

“This merger will create opportunities for growth – not just for our business, but for our people. That’s why, from the outset, we made clear that every union employee at the combined company would have a job,” said Norfolk Southern CEO Mark George. “Today’s commitment with SMART-TD takes that promise a step further and reflects our deep appreciation for and confidence in the people who keep our railroads moving every day.”

An Unprecedented Agreement

The agreement stands out as a model of collaboration between labor and management at the highest level. It demonstrates that even in times of great change, industry leaders and unions can come together to secure both economic progress and the livelihoods of working people.

“This is more than a contract—it’s a commitment,” Ferguson added. “It’s proof that when workers and management sit down in good faith, we can build an industry that serves everyone: employees, companies, and the American people who depend on the railroads every day.”

With this agreement, SMART-TD, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern are leading the way in shaping a stronger future for employees, customers, and the American economy.

SMART-TD members can now access a new online Job Insurance (DIPP) claim form via the Member Portal on the SMART website and the SMART Union Mobile App.

By utilizing an online format, your union hopes to make the claim and local officer verification processes easier and timelier for members seeking benefits.

What You Need to Know

As currently required on the paper form, members must complete or verify their personal details, incident information, selection of a GCA or Local officer to confirm discipline and include (or upload) a discipline letter when using the online form.

Once a member submits the form, an automated e-mail is sent to the General Committee of Adjustment (GCA) or local officer noted with a link to the claim form so that the statement section can be completed.

After that, the information is submitted electronically to the DIPP Administrator for review and approval.

What Happens to the Paper Forms and PDFs?

Don’t worry, they’re not going anywhere.

If you prefer, you can still complete a hard copy of the form and mail it to the DIPP office or complete a fillable PDF and e-mail it to the DIPP office.

The choice is ultimately yours, and we encourage members to use whichever method is best for them.

If you have questions about the new form, please reach out to your local DIPP representative, call the TD office, or e-mail DIPP_TD@smart-union.org.

A targeted communication dedicated to our veteran members is forthcoming. To ensure no one is left behind, we direct all members who have served in the Armed Forces to confirm and update their veteran status in TD Connect without delay.

This is not a mere formality. Accurate records enable us to maintain a strong line of communication, address the needs of our veteran members, and guarantee the recognition and support they deserve. If you know a fellow veteran who has not yet updated their information, please encourage them to take immediate action.

SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson is a proud U.S. Army veteran himself and understands the gravity of honoring service and is resolute in his commitment to ensure every veteran member receives proper acknowledgment.

Take a moment today to update your veteran status through the SMART app, the SMART Website Member Portal, or through your Local S&T utilizing TD Connect. A small action on your part strengthens our ability to serve those who have served our country.

On behalf of SMART-TD, we thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your continued strength.

Strong Wage Gains, Quality-of-Life Improvements Secured with NO Givebacks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Independence, OH — The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD) announced today that it has reached a Tentative National Agreement (TA) with rail carriers represented by the National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC).

Scope of the Agreement

This TA applies to SMART-TD members working for the Class I railroads BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and Canadian National, and other participating railroads, including the shortlines covered by national negotiations. Union Pacific, CSX, and CPKC are not part of this agreement, as they are not negotiating through the NCCC in this process.

Significant Wage Increases

The Tentative Agreement provides five consecutive annual general wage increases:

  • July 1, 2025 – 4.0%
  • July 1, 2026 – 3.75%
  • July 1, 2027 – 3.5%
  • July 1, 2028 – 3.25%
  • July 1, 2029 – 3.0%

By the end of the agreement’s term, SMART-TD members will have received a compounded increase of more than 18.75%, reinforcing economic security and reflecting members’ essential contributions to America’s freight network. If ratified, retroactive pay provisions will ensure members receive back pay to July 1, 2025.

Healthcare Benefits Expanded

The agreement maintains current health and welfare coverage without increases to copays or deductibles. It also expands vision and dental benefits, doubles the monthly opt-out bonus, adds coverage for voluntary male sterilization, and provides a new lower cost HSA eligible option for employee only coverage. Additionally, this TA preserves the current 15% cost-sharing formula for healthcare contributions, along with a freeze on the monthly contribution in effect at the end of the agreement, to prevent carriers from imposing higher contribution rates on employees and their families beyond 2030.

Vacation and Sick Leave Improvements

For the first time in more than 25 years, SMART-TD members will see improvements to their national vacation agreement, including:

  • Expanded vacation benefits to provide vacation time for new hires and earlier accrual of vacation time for members with two or more years of service.
  • New opportunities for single-day vacation usage.
  • Commitments to local discussions on securing paid sick leave where they are not currently provided.

Yardmaster Vacation and Rest Day Improvements

In addition, Yardmasters will now enjoy the same vacation compensation rules that T&E members have had for decades. Weekly vacation pay will be based on 1/52 of the prior year’s earnings or five (5) basic days’ pay, whichever is greater. Yardmaster vacation pay will also include their earnings from T&E shifts.

Further, this TA guarantees extraboard Yardmasters scheduled rest days.

No Meaningful Concessions

In exchange for these added benefits, Carriers would be able to implement a few healthcare cost containment programs that are designed to work in the background, with no noticeable disruption or substantive changes in coverage for our members. So in essence, we aren’t making any givebacks.

Leadership Statement

SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson hailed the agreement as a turning point for members across the country:

“This Tentative Agreement secures solid wage increases, protects and expands our healthcare, and achieves quality-of-life improvements that generations of railroaders have fought to obtain. Perhaps the most significant achievement here is that we’ve tentatively secured all of these benefits without making any concessions to the Carriers. We hope that our members will see the significance and value with this tentative agreement, and the decision will soon rest with them in the ratification process.”

Next Steps: Discussion and Ratification Vote

As required by the SMART Constitution, we are currently going through a 15-day Q&A period with our rail General Chairpersons. After the Sept. 30 deadline for General Chairpersons to submit their questions, our negotiating team will compile those questions into a single document and return it to the Carriers to create an agreed-upon Q&A list, which will then be included as a part of the agreement.

Once that process is complete, the finished Tentative Agreement will then be submitted to all involved SMART-TD membership for review and ratification. The ratification process will ensure every member will have the opportunity to make their voice heard on this landmark contract.

For those railroads who are not party to this Agreement, local on-property discussions will continue until the parties are able to reach a Tentative Agreement, or until an impasse is reached and we proceed to the next step in the Railway Labor Act’s process. We will also be posting news of any developments on these properties in our regular newsletters, whenever they become available.

Every three hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the United States.

Think about that for a moment. That’s a jarring statistic that impacts communities nationwide.

That’s why SMART-TD supports Operation Lifesaver, Inc.’s (OLI) See Tracks? Think Train® Week, which kicks off today and runs through September 21.

Click here to get involved, test your rail safety knowledge, access a digital toolkit, and more ►

According to OLI, more than 2,300 people are hurt or killed each year in railroad crossing and trespass incidents in North America, and more than 60% of collisions happen at crossing with clearly visible gates and lights.

That’s why Operation Lifesaver is committed to reducing preventable crashes, injuries, and deaths on and near railroad tracks, not just this week but all year long.

Publicizing Rail Safety

Now in its ninth year, formerly known as Rail Safety Week, OLI places the importance of safety when walking or driving near railroad tracks in the spotlight. Activities, in conjunction with other organizations, take place throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Each day focuses on a different rail safety topic, including Operation Clear Track with law enforcement and first responders, crossing safety, transit safety, and Wearing Red for Rail Safety.

How You Can Help #STOPTrackTragedies

Operation Lifesaver has compiled a list of ways that you can get involved with See Tracks? Think Train® Week, many of which are easy to do from home, including…

  • Share the rail safety message during See Tracks? Think Train® Week and beyond.
  • Know the facts. Recognize the signs. Make good decisions around tracks and trains and encourage others to do the same.
  • Consider volunteering with Operation Lifesaver to share the rail safety education message.
